PREMIERE: LUSAINT – “DARK HORSE”

The Mancunian songstress impresses with her performance, musicality and songwriting on her debut original cut.

Based in Manchester, promising artist Lusaint has been blessing our ears with sonic goodness for years now. Having first emerged back in 2019, when her cover of “More Than Friends” achieved virality and was featured on Love Island, she has since amassed over 20 million streams, with her acoustic covers of hit songs like “Crazy In Love” and “Wicked Game” proving a big hit with listeners. Having made her name through crafty covers, we have now finally been gifted some original material from Lusaint, delivered in the form of this smooth, vibrant and soulful new number.

“Dark Horse” draws on the influence of blues, jazz and Motown – genres that the singer-songwriter grew up surrounded by. Borrowing sensibilities from a majority of styles on this new cut, Lusaint merges musical craft with emotional depth, with her show-stopping vocals driving the track forward, supported by delicate piano work, groove-laden percussion and dusty guitars. It’s polished and meticulously crafted, but also brimming with emotional resonance and raw honesty. For a debut original offering, it’s an eye-catching, highly impressive effort.

“Dark Horse” is the first teaser from the singer’s forthcoming debut EP, Self Sabotage, which looks set to be a refreshing and open dive into Lusaint’s soul and artistry.
