If you know the UK underground rap scene, you know Fliptrix. The class-laden rapper has been enthralling fans with his nuanced rhyming for decades. One of four members of the esteemed group The Four Owls, Fliptrix has unveiled a multitude of releases that consistently impress, as well as acting as managing director of one of the UK’s most essential hip hop labels, High Focus Records. Fliptrix’s consistency in quality over the years has established him as one of UK rap’s most cherished individuals, continuously progressing his groundbreaking sound and never succumbing to inauthenticity, staying true to his roots.
His latest album, Mantra No. 9, is the perfect example of such. A mixture of new school and old school tendencies, Fliptrix pulls out all the stops on the new project. Boasting features from the likes of Onoe Caponoe, Coops and Verb T, the album takes us on a journey through Fliptrix’s mind, with the rapper showing himself to be an insightful and measured narrator. The album is accompanied by a classy video for lead single “Gratitude”, a track that highlights the thankfulness of Fliptrix to those who came before him.
The work of a dedicated servant of the game, the single and entire album affirms the idea that classic hip hop is very much alive in the UK. A triumphant effort.
