PREMIERE: EARTHQUAKE LIGHTS – DESERT BLOOM

The New York five-piece achieve new heights on the stellar body of work.

Earthquake Lights have a band name almost as fantastic as their music. The five-piece band are straight out of New York, and have found themselves ingrained in its flourishing alt rock scene. Having met at college, the band found swift acclaim with the release of their debut EP, Bangups and Hangups, back in 2012. A hiatus followed, before the band returned in ’19 with their anticipated debut LP Distress Signals, a thematic masterclass that explored the idea of being stranded at sea. They’ve now returned with a similarly textured body of work, Desert Bloom, which takes its title from the scarce and extraordinary growth of plants in the desert.

The nine-pronged album is consuming, classy and compelling. Its seamlessly blend of alternative rock tendencies with ethereal orchestral passages is refreshing and playful, with the strong diversity of the instrumental palettes reflecting the brevity of the lyrical themes. The album’s easy listening capabilities align well with an impressive depth of character and craft, as we are taken on a journey that flows with profound romanticism and sentimental musings. Metaphorical undertones ooze through the project, with the band using physical ideas of being stranded at sea or in the desert to signify being lost within oneself.

Speaking on the creation of the new album, lead singer Myles Rodenhouse explains, “It is very much a record of deadlines and pushing our creative process forward. It was tough but really important and healthy for us because we found out a bit about ourselves and how we create.”

A profound and powerful project, the album cements Earthquake Lights’ position within the alt rock space and leaves us excited to find out what lies ahead!
