PREMIERE: ZIGGY ALBERTS – “DANCING IN THE DARK”

The Australian singer-songwriter unveils a music video for a track plucked straight from his album’s title track.

Ziggy Alberts has made a name for himself in the Australian music scene as an artist who’s truly about his craft. Churning out self-proclaimed ‘Future Folk’, listeners are instantly captivated by Alberts’ stripped-back production and bare-bones basics. The artist’s latest offering is Dancing In The Dark – Alberts’ fifth studio album to be brought out into the world. Refining and fine-tuning his sound, in Dancing In The Dark Alberts is at his best. Adding fuel to the fire, the music video for the album’s titular track has at long last been unleashed.

“Dancing In The Dark” envelops the listener into what feels like a cloud. Spacey, muted production paves the way for guitars to twang from ear to ear, while Alberts’ vocals float along. Centred on themes of connection, lyrics like “A woman’s alone in a birthing ward/ With no visitors allowed/ It’s driving me crazy when you try to say/ That it’s good for the people somehow” are elevated with the track’s soaring music video. Lensed by Andre Rerekura, who specialises in ocean videography, Western Australia’s vibrant reef is laid out on display. At once surreal, yet earthly – the “Dancing In The Dark” music video is a triumph.

Alberts’ new album is no doubt a step in the right direction – evolving his sound towards a receptive audience. When someone is in their element, they can’t help but pull others into their orbit. Well, with Alberts – the proof is in the pudding.
