PREMIERE: ROMAN AROUND – “TELL ME ALL ABOUT YOU”

The California-based Alt artist invites you into their mind’s eye with a searing new EP.

Roman Rivera, better known as their musical outfit roman around, hails from sun-soaked California. Coming of age in Fresno, they’ve kept roots there – passing their talent on as a music educator. With their identity as non-binary in and of itself challenging gender norms, Rivera carves out a safe space for themselves and others in the LGBTQ+, POC, and music community.

Marking a turning point in Rivera’s career, the artist has ventured into their very first EP. Debuting “Tell Me All About You”, Rivera opens listeners up to their vast emotional landscape. Meandering between toxic relationships, loss, and the environment – the artist’s diaristic offering is as personal as can be.

Flitting between genres like Alt-R&B, Post-Punk, and Indie Pop – “Tell Me All About You” is a ride. Spread out over eight tracks, the EP is full to the brim with twangy guitars, spine-tingling synths, and intimate lyrics. The opening track “Good Luck” is atmospheric, full of woozy synths, which sets the tone for the rest of the project. From the song “DNT”, which chronicle sthe throes of a toxic relationship over a groove-filled baseline, to “Star Signs” which is pure thrashing Indie Rock, to the lulling, languorous “Comes With Age” – this EP displays Rivera’s sheer musical aptitude.

Rivera wields inspiration from the likes of Blood Orange, Toro Y Moi, and DIIV to craft up their oeuvre – their debut EP is a triumph. With this being their first full project, and nods from the award-winning radio station KCRW and Spotify, there’s no telling where the young artist will end up. That said, we’re eagerly awaiting what else they pull out of the bag.
