Last night was the 28th Critics Choice Awards, an evening where all of the film industry’s major players are under one roof. All gathered to honour Hollywood’s biggest names, at the Los Angeles Fairmount Century Plaza, it was nothing less than a night to remember. Our fave celebs pulled out all the stops, gracing us with jaw-dropping gowns and stunning ensembles. Throw some multiple wins and wholesome moments into the mix – and it was just *chef’s kiss*.

Head below for the fashion round-up…

Darling in Dior

Starting off in a blaze, let’s begin with Anya Taylor-Joy. Widely adored for her gorgeous red carpet looks, last night she looked darling in Dior. Opting for a mesh dress featuring intricate embroidery reminiscent of fish scales, this look is as glam as it is visually intriguing. The long hemline contrasts with the sheer gown, toeing the line between revealing and concealing. With a chic updo, and sparkling jewels to boot – we’re simply obsessed.

Regal in McQueen

Up next is Miss Elle Fanning. With each foot firmly planted in both the fashion and film worlds, Fanning has a knack for delivering the dreamiest looks. Last night was no different, as she looked like a vision in Alexander McQueen. Donning the label’s latest collection, Spring/Summer 2023, the young actress was serving up distressed chic. In the champagne gown, opulence is juxtaposed with dishevelment, as the Victorian-esque construction almost falls apart at the seams. Looking absolutely regal, this look has been living in our heads rent free.

All-black Butler

Austin Butler attended last night’s ceremony in the hopes of taking the crown of Best Actor for his role as Elvis in the 2022 film of the same name. An insanely successful pursuit, the fanfare for Elvis paralleled the mania that followed the blues star wherever he went. Looking dapper dressed in all black, Butler accessorised with Cartier, no less. With a Cartier pocket gem, chain necklace, bracelet, and rings – Butler elevated his look with some dazzling jewels.

Quinta won in Robert Wun

Following last week’s Golden Globes, actress-writer-director extraordinaire Quinta Brunson has been on a winning streak – this time around, snapping up the trophy at the Critics Choice Awards for Best Comedy. Brunson looked like a prize herself wearing Robert Wun, in a gown that has frills for days. Sculptural and textured, the dress is plucked straight from the label’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection. It’s floaty and mermaid-esque, as the tulle juts out to create a kind of tail. The tulle is also reminiscent of gills, and the sparkly mesh bodice might as well be light reflecting off of the surface of water. We don’t mind getting wet!

Glistening in Gucci

Last but not at all least in our fashion round-up is Daisy Edgar-Jones. The Normal People actress came to stunt last night, and we must dish out the details. In Gucci Spring/Summer 2023, Edgar-Jones was a glistening dream. Draped across the actress’ body, the fabric leaves for some cut outs – sexy, while still chic. The long hemline adds some drama and flair, along with the swishy sleeves. A strappy sandal peeks out from behind the side split, and all in all – it’s clear she did not come to play.

And now, onto the awards…

We love to see it :’)

Although the utterly talented Zendaya wasn’t present to receive her award last night, everyone attending still showed up and showed out. Her accolade was for Best Actress for her role in the gritty series Euphoria, and it was very well deserved. The cameras even captured Andrew Garfield extending his support to the actress, mouthing the words “Well done, Zendaya!”. Too cute.

Double whammy

Continuing the thread of multiple wins, seasoned actress Angela Bassett doubled up her Golden Globe for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, with a Critics Choice award to boot. Taking the crown for Best Supporting actress, this accolade feels even more touching – as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was made in the absence of star Chadwick Boseman. Quoting the late Toni Morrison in her acceptance speech, Bassett imparted: “Your life is already a miracle of chance, just waiting for you to order its destiny.”

Third time’s a charm

Speaking of stacking up the trophies, actress Cate Blanchett won her third Critics Choice award for her titular role in the film Tár. Making the most of her moment on stage, Blanchett calls out the patriarchy – calling into question the very structure of these awards ceremonies. She goes on to say that every single woman in the industry, whether it be “television, film, advertising, tampon commercials, whatever” – all continually inspire her. What a woman!
