PRADA S/S23

The House debuts their latest collection in a cinematic campaign starring Letitia Wright.

Coming back with a bite, Prada unveils their latest Spring/Summer 2023 collection. Both men’s and women’s, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons continue to evolve and unfold the complexities of life through clothes.

As a label centred on vast emotional landscapes, it makes perfect sense that Prada has joined forces with acclaimed director Nicolas Winding Refn for the collection’s campaign film. Refn dreamed up an exclusive short-format feature film, “Touch of Crude”, which is an exploration of femininity in the modern age. A fluid, changing entity – what it means to be feminine is called into question. Following a woman embarking on a move, she’s met with a mysterious presence in her new house. Happening upon a black box, which unlocks multiple universes, each embodies the perspective of various women. With an illustrious premiere at the Lyon Lumière Film Festival in October as well as at the Geneva International Film Festival – its online premiere on Prada’s website was hotly anticipated.

The campaign imagery lensed by David Sims further explores this theme, offering up a cinematically-charged photography style. Drawing inspiration from the high contrast, noir-esque quality of classic Hollywood and European cinema, each image is a mere snapshot of an unseen, unfolding wider narrative. Crafting up tension between different views and lives, Prada enlists the help of a star-studded cast. Renowned actors such as our Winter 22/23 coverstar Letitia Wright, Hunter Schafer, and Louis Partridge all help to tell the story that Prada is venturing to tell.

By profession, actors embody ‘the other’. There’s a persevering duality to their nature, and this campaign brings it to light. With “Touch of Crude” almost juxtaposing the campaign imagery, a sense of pureness and simplicity emerges. Offering up a cinematic projection of reality, the snapshots evoke glimpses into a whole other life.
