Hailing from Berlin, Anastave’s previous release “Medicine” was whipped up into a frenzy of critical praise – lauding its refreshing take on modern electronic music. Meandering between being a recording artist, songwriter, and producer – Anastave’s drive to experiment and alchemize sets her apart from her peers. Casting her in the realm of musicians like Massive Attack, Bjork, and Nicolas Jaar – Anastave is emerging as one of Berlin’s freshest talents.
Blazing onto the scene in 2016, Anastave has been carefully concocting her sound, slowly but surely amassing a following since her debut album. Now, she’s changing gears. Set to take on the next step of her career, the young artist is offering up a more evolved, mature sound. Of the double release, “Better” has been years in the making – but, it required some worldly experience – aging like wine. “Fake Smile” however, was begging to be heard – bursting its way through almost immediately.
“Better” is a meditative track. Tentative piano keys make way for Anastave’s soft lilting voice to appear. Pulsing percussion then builds, crescendoing into a soaring mix of synths, piano, and orchestral sounds. Conversely, “Fake Smile” displays sheer musical fortitude. Self-assured, powerhouse vocals lay over top of a medley of guitar strings, while harmonies embellish and brighten the track.
Speaking about the release, Anastave says: “’Better’ is about the yearning to be someone you’re not — to try to change when you’re not ready, and ‘Fake Smile’ is about the regret in feeling like you’ve lost your opportunity to change, like you’re destined to be the person you don’t want to be anymore.”
In addition to these shining new tracks, a visualiser is also in the making – set to arrive very soon. With a driven approach to production, and pushing the envelope when it comes to her sound – this new release is sure to solidify her place in the game.
