Born in the Dominican Republic, and bred in the Bronx – Moreno ITF is emerging within the music scene as one to watch. Renowned for giving drill his signature Latin flair, Moreno ITF offers up a galvanising debut EP “GANGOSO WORLD”. New York is a hodgepodge melting pot of cultures – so it comes as no surprise that the city would give rise to Moreno ITF’s genre-bending tunes. Existing at the intersection of Afro-Caribbean music and the New York club scene, the tracks in “GANGOSO WORLD” transcend drill music as a genre.
Coined by the rapper himself, the “Gangoso” lifestyle speaks to his mission to shine a new light on, and represent his culture. “GANGOSO WORLD” starts off in a blaze with “ROBOCOP” – setting the scene for Moreno ITF’s commanding flow. Other tracks like “PULL UP” are a fusion of Afro-Caribbean inspired drill that are perfect for late nights at the club. Melding together an English drill drawl and Spanish’s powerful plosive impact – what results is an entrancing experience for the ears. Just like an onion, Moreno ITF pulls back layers of his Gangoso world – intimately offering up pieces of his story. Latin culture, gangster love, the pain of the game – Moreno ITF uses all of these in tandem to world-build – dreaming up and communicating across the exhilarating universe that he’s crafted up for himself.
Reflecting on the EP, Moreno ITF notes: “A lot of people in this world are in love with the spice of Latin culture and the energy of New York City. Because I grew up between the Dominican Republic and the Bronx, I can connect with them in this sense, whether it’s through my lyricism, the energy I bring to a track or my presence. My music is a direct result of the cultures that raised me, and Gangoso is a true representation of my world and its flavours.”
Moreno ITF has been making waves in the scene for a minute. Earning nods of respect from the likes of Afropunk and NPR – this new release is set to solidify Moreno ITF’s place in the game. With jam-packed live performances at SXSW, and shows alongside the likes of Chucky 73 under his belt, there’s no doubt that Moreno ITF is only just getting started.
