PREMIERE: ANIMAI – “NO ENEMY”

The East London-based artist and producer shares arresting new single.

The dizzying sonic space of East London’s Animai drags you tumbling in on the artist’s fourth single “No Enemy”. Rooted in the hedonistic swirl of ‘90s electronica, but filtered through a future-facing alt-pop lens, the track sees Animai documenting her internal and external perceptions of fear.

‘When I composed the track, I was thinking about my own mental health and how we can all be triggered into acting/reacting in ways to protect ourselves,” she explains. “Self-awareness brings a realisation that there is no *enemy*, instead, only pain, and the parts within us that we cleverly developed to protect ourselves from remembering that pain.”

The artist’s lyrical dexterity accompanies her prestigious jazz musical education at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and her immersion in dance music culture as a producer and singer/songwriter for almost a decade. Using her craft as a means to channel long-term struggles with mental health conditions like OCD, PTSD, depression and body dysmorphia, the emotions portrayed feel tangible when Animai’s in charge of communicating them. Success of even greater proportions would certainly appear to beckon in 2023.
