PREMIERE: FANTOM – “FANTOM OF THE OPERA”

The Berlin-based pop provocateur makes a grand entrance into the alt-pop scene with debut EP.

Blazing into the alt-pop sphere with his debut EP “Fantom of the Popera”, fantom offers up a decadent collection of seven tracks – at long last tying the young talent’s musical artistry in one neat package.

Hailing from Brussels, much of fantom’s childhood was spent pouring over trailblazing pop icons such as Madonna. Now, the up-and-coming artist is ready to embark on his own journey – wielding his musical education to propel him into the future. With years of industry experience under his belt, fantom’s production prowess has garnered praise from industry darlings like Doja Cat, A.G. Cook, and Slayyter. We have to say, these illustrious nods of approval are, quite literally, music to our ears.

Opening with glitchy spoken-word poetry in “Catharsis (Intro)”, it sets the stage for a spellbinding journey through sparkling sonic landscapes. Tracks like “666” are moody and stormy, laced with hooks that explore our deepest darkest desires. Others, such as “Rattle Snake” are pure earworms, gripping listeners with the invigorating energy of a club-pop banger.

The EP’s tracks oscillate and meander between hyperpop sensibilities, while others are more trap-inspired – evoking the entrancing horrorcore of Memphis rap. One track that particularly exemplifies this is “Eclipse”, which sprouted from a terrifying homophobic encounter that the artist experienced. Bringing light to this fantom reflects, “I wanted to write something about how the night and darkness changes the mood of a city, making it a more dangerous and fragile place for queer people like me.” We’re always here for artists using their craft to speak up for issues impacting them, and “Fantom of the Opera” is a shining example of channeling one’s creativity in order to work through pain.

All in all, “Fantom of the Opera” is a feat of introspective, wittily poetic genius. If this is fantom’s first release, we can’t imagine what else he has under his sleeve; along with his rapidly growing fanbase, we’re super keen to find out.
