Hailing from the East Coast, New Jersey to be specific, this multi-hyphenate releases “Jersey Devil”. A journey through a multitude of soundscapes, this new track envelops the listener into Dana Why’s troubled, overflowing mind. Trying his hand at a variety of creative outputs, such as filmmaking, songwriting, producing, and photography – the young artist is “never not creating.” And for that we are glad, as this new release synthesises his many talents into one neat package.
In New Jersey folklore, the Jersey Devil is said to be a mythical creature with leathery skin, wings, and hooves. The legend goes that it lets out a “blood-curdling scream”, and it is with this mysticism that Dana Why’s track is built upon. “Jersey Devil” opens with distorted, slightly discordant guitars – which then descend into what feels like madness. The guitars become more syncopated, and drawn out – underpinning Dana Why’s crooning, anguished vocals.
Much like the track itself, the accompanying music video is a feat of multilayered textures. Animation, film, and digital footage constantly underlay one another – interacting with each other in the same way that the track’s varying soundscapes do. All in all, Dana Why has a good thing going, and if this new single is anything to go by – there’s no sign of him slowing down.
