With the British capital as her current stomping ground, Czech alt-indie pop artist Maella unveils her fresh new track and music video “Tudu Tudu Tu”. Her undeniable gothic sensibilities, of which her Czech heritage surely plays a part, give her an edge in the alt-indie pop scene. Infusing her work with a certain darkness that is hard to fabricate, Maella is bringing something new to the table; with a nod from BBC’s Introducing London already under her belt, this new track is fuel to the already blazing fire.
“Tudu Tudu Tu” features a medley of Western-style guitars, pulsing synths, and is sprinkled with syncopated vocals – transforming heartache into a cathartically carnal dance track. On the song’s genesis Maella reflects, “I wrote Tudu Tudu Tu during the dire days of lockdown, isolated in my tiny London flat. One evening around midnight I had a glass of red wine and decided to write a song without judgement or overthinking. I just let it flow freely. Because of the spontaneous nature of writing this track, the lyrics just fell out of me.”
The track’s jaunty energy is further brought to the surface by its playfully surreal music video. Trotting around a Chinese restaurant in cowboy boots, Maella surprises oblivious customers with a groovy, somehow sultry, rendition of a Western square dance. Fit with atmospheric, layered lighting – a disco ball sparkles onto every scene. We were certainly dazzled by Maella’s new release, and we’re keen to see what else this young artist has in store.
