When describing self-titled debut album, lead singer, Tasche de la Rocha simply begins: “It’s a mood.” Documenting the whirlwind that is simply life, and the constant transmutation we experience, via four-part harmonies, grunge guitar, nuggets of punk, surf, cabaret and as you might expect given their moniker, “we travel to the planet of psychedelic doo-wop,” Tasche continues.

Made in New Orleans, the four-piece’s debut record is self-produced by lead Tasche, and Eric Heigle (Arcade Fire, Dr. John, and 79rs Gang, among others). The pair captures the duality of life’s tumultuous bumps and indents, at different points conveying unsettling uncertainty and blissful euphoria. It’s a feminist record, that documents realising the power of your identity and the necessity to shun things that cause you harm. It details a woman’s navigation of the perils of daily life in a patriarchal society, and a superhuman propensity to still emerge resplendent despite it all. It’s the ample soundtrack to a life as diverse as it documents, from intimate moments to rumination, and finding resilience amongst life’s challenges.

The tapestry of life communicated is perhaps informed by De La Rocha’s odyssey to inhabiting her position in the musical force she fronts today, with performing origins busking as a teenager on New Orlean’s streets. Quickly garnering attention, she later performed at the homes of celebrities like The White Lotus star Jennifer Coolidge – the ultimate accolade if you ask us.
