NEW NOISE: LITTLE DESTROYER

The Canadian three-piece unveils the music video for their brand new single, “sucker4u”.

Demonstrating an unexpected new twist to their sound, Little Destroyer strip back their teeth-gnashing production and pummelling baselines in favour of a punching uptempo track, titled “sucker4u”. Irresistibly playful, the track effortlessly captures the unbridled joy that follows falling in love and finally letting your hair down. Dominated by band frontwoman Allie Sheldan’s biting vocals, “sucker4u” scratches at our pop punk tastes while maintaining the tenacious grit that defines Little Destroyer’s sound.

Accompanied by a music video directed by Wayne Moreheart, “sucker4u” continues to capture the lighter side of life — showing the Canadian trio strolling through the countryside, whiskey in hand, while clips of a rioting pool party pull into focus. Written in the thick of lockdown, “sucker4u” is a slice of escapism that allows listeners to delve into communal spaces — even when they might feel alone.

While Allie’s vocals continue to command the track, it is the camaraderie shared between the trio that ignites their soundscape. Blending their respective backgrounds in punk psych, rock and roll, the band continue to disrupt the world of rock to provide music that is just as moving as it is enjoyable. Sitting down with us, Little Destroyer touches upon this and more in an exclusive interview. Head below now to watch the visual for the track and to read the full interview now…

Hey Little Destroyer! How are you all doing? Where are we speaking to you from?
Vancouver BC Canada! Currently on our way to St. Pauli to play Reeperbahn festival!

Let’s start at the very beginning. How did the three of you meet? And when did you decide to form a band? Have you all always known that you were musically inclined? How did you discover your passion?
ALLIE: We’ve all been playing since we were kids – I wrote my first song at eight, titled kind of hilariously, kind of alarmingly “in the evergreen forest of despair” and started my first punk band at 13. Chris and Michael were enlisted as the prodigious teen rhythm section in a touring band that took them out of high school and all over the country but eventually left them sleeping/living in their van.
CHRIS: In terms of how we came together as a band – Allie had a solo project called “CIGARETTE LEGS” and was headed to play one of the best music festivals in Canada called Sled Island, Michael and I wanted wristbands to the festival so two weeks out she added our names to her tech rider as the ‘band’.. which meant we had to learn some songs real quick… a funny moment that worked out pretty well.. we got the wristbands and have been playing together ever since.
A: Like I mentioned – I started my first band in the summer between grade eight and nine, in my friend Brit’s garage. We found other members by placing ads in the classified section of the local newspaper (very analogue) and our punk band Rio Bent was born. Eventually my brother Kurtis joined and we played together for 10 years! I had been playing bass and writing ‘songs’ since I was around eight and I’d say my future was sealed in stone around that age thanks to Green Day, No Doubt, Blur, TLC & The Distillers.
C: I started in grade eight with bass and guitar in music class. I loved it right away. Our high school had such a great music program. Immediately I started joining bands and as we got better we started playing shows in the neighbouring towns. I remember being 16 and playing my first bar show… I was underage and wore two hoodies to trick the owners into thinking I was big enough/old enough to be in there. It ended in a bar-clearing brawl. I was hooked.

Talk us through your tune-crafting process. How do you all bring an idea for a song to fruition?
A: Well I will say that writing “sucker4u” almost broke up the band, but I’ll get into that a bit later… Our songs come from lots of different places, the method and the inspiration. Sometimes an idea is spawned from a crazy beat/synth loop that Michael or Chris has made, it creates a feeling, a mood, and I know what lyrics I want to add. Other times I have basically a whole song written and bring it to the boys and together we bring it into its final form. Other times we hack up old, tossed aside songs and make new Frankenstein songs! Sometimes it happens in the jam space, instruments in hand, other times it’s passing files back and forth via the mind-bending technology we called the ‘internet’.

Congratulations on the release of “sucker4u”! What was your mindset when writing this track?
A: Well like I mentioned… This song has a tempestuous story! This was one of those passed back and forth through the internet songs. It was created at the height of covid when we were locked down and stuck in our respective homes. So I had this kind of insane song that started with this 50’s style surf guitar and breathy vocals. I got stuck and didn’t know where to go with it so I came up with what I thought was going to be a super fun experiment with the boys. I gave them the key and tempo of the song and asked them to create some loops that had chorus or verse (or whatever) vibes.. so without hearing the actual song idea, they created tracks to add in. Now I have to preface this next part with this: Michael had JUST asked us to please stop adding drum parts into the tracks because it was harder for him to create his own beats for the song. Anyway, Chris in his excitement of the experiment kind of bulldozed the scene and started sending loops that had very finished drum parts in them and in my effort to set things right for Michael, I really snapped Chris’ head off, clean off, I really scolded him and.. that turned into Chris not talking to Me or Michael for several days. Like phone off, not answering calls, not answering texts, blocked. Michael and I were spinning out, like.. we have never gone more than 24 hours without talking to one another, this felt different like something had really fractured. Turns out it was just our minds because we had been locked inside for four months, trying to write an album. ANY ANY WAY, we eventually reconciled but it took time.. and to honour our almost break up and then makeup I used every idea the boys sent, mashed into all the ideas I had already and that’s why this song is like the inside of a circus tent.

What do you hope your fans can take from it?
Problems are resolvable. Don’t break up the band. Uhh and also, love makes us do crazy ass things.

What was the inspiration behind the music video? Who came up with the concept?
Mostly we just wanted to dress up like Motorhead from the Ace of Spades album cover. So we did, and then Wayne Moreheart (who created the video) suggested we stumble into a pool party. And that is all there is to it!

Are there any genres or soundscapes you have never explored that you would like to?
Bird sounds.

Where do you see yourselves in five years time? / What’s your next goal for Little Destroyer?
A: I got into a bad accident last year that left me with a head injury and a long recovery so I’m just grateful every day that I am still able to play and create music and do it with two of my best friends—it’s not something I take for granted. I’m grateful that my bandmates, friends, and family are healthy and happy. Honestly – I know it sounds cheesy, but it all feels like a gift. So I hope down the road I have the same things. I will add though, we’d love to have a lot more music to share and to tour, tour, tour! And maybe I have an 87’ Jaguar XJS.

And finally, what’s one interesting fact about yourselves that we wouldn’t be able to find on a press release?
Uhhh Chris used to be a pro skateboarder, Michael used to have a Tamagotchi farm and I broke both my arms at the same time by jumping off a piano when I was five.
