“In this modern landscape, don’t we all feel observed and scrutinised in a lot of ways, famous or not? I’m not complaining; I’m fully aware that I chose my profession willingly and there are so many parts of it that I adore, but it does come with aspects that will just never be easy. I’m always torn between the balance of wanting to share my life with the rest of the world and wanting to shield it from outside opinions that really don’t matter.”
With her debut single “Merry Go ‘Round” turning 10 this September, and an impressive five studio albums under her belt, Musgraves’ most recent rendering was something of a dream come true for the singer-songwriter; she performed her version of the Elvis Presley hit “Can’t Help Falling in Love” for Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis movie. Having been a fan of the Australian filmmaker since his 1996 adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, Musgraves collaborated with our shoot team – including photographer James J. Robinson, stylist Marie Higuchi, executive producer Erica Cornwall and on-site production team Stephanie Kha and Hiromi Otsuka, as well as her glam squad Giovanni Delgado and Moani Lee – across four countries and three time zones to create imagery that pays homage to one of Luhrmann’s most-loved movies.
