From history-making wins to a couture-adorned carpet: Here are the highlights of this year’s Academy Awards.
While most of us enjoyed a mundane Monday nestled deep into the comfort of our sofas, it was a night of glamour and accolades for actors and artists alike as the 2022 edition of the Emmys rolled out its red carpet and polished off its trophies. From prodigious awards to extravagant gowns gracing the carpet, this year’s ceremony was certainly one for the history and look books.
So, to see our highlights of the night – whether it be outfits or ovations – head below now…
Lizzo made it halfway to EGOT status
We can’t remember the last time we didn’t have Lizzo in an award ceremony round-up, so there was no surprise when the “About Damn Time” singer took to the stage to collect her trophy for Outstanding Competition Program for her work in Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls: the Amazon series that documented her search for the perfect group of backup dancers. Here’s to the Big Grrrls, Lizzo.
Zendaya made history… twice
At this stage, it is almost impossible to decipher where Zendaya begins and Rue Bennett ends — a print that has earned the actor her second Emmy for her performance in Euphoria. Becoming the first Black woman to win “Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series”, Zendaya is also officially named as the youngest two-time acting winner in history. Zendaya, we applaud you!
Lee Jung-Jae quickly followed suit
Another actor making their mark on history was Squid Gamefront man Lee Jung-Jae, who became the first Asian actor to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, while his Director, Hwang Dong-Hyuk became the first ever director to win for a non-English language series for his efforts in the Red Light Green Light episode.
The White Lotus made a clean sweep
Leading him to win his first two Emmys, the social satire series The White Lotus saw Mike White recognised for his directing and writing, while performances from Jennifer Coolidge and Murray Bartlett were also given their first Emmys with supporting actor nods.
And, couture was served across the carpet
Whilst we enjoy learning the latest series to receive its well-deserved hype, it is the fashion moments for us that keep us hooked to every Emmy alert — and this year by no means disappointed…
