NEW NOISE: KELLY & KYLE

The Cambodian-born, Seattle-hailing twins talk their feel-good debut single, plus working with the previous collaborator of little-known names, Donna Summer and Kanye West.

Kelly & Kyle

Serotonin is here in its purest form with Kelly & Kyle’s jaunty new single “Lovely”. A track that is what it says on the tin, “Lovely” is a soul-funk pop earworm with nothing but confidence and levity from the twins, and what’s more, it’s only their debut release.

Featuring the masterful handy work of legendary producer Michael Binikos (Donna Summer, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West), “Lovely” is the first of three tracks comprising Kelly & Kyle’s upcoming “Lovely” EP, made with Binikos at Hollywood’s Sunset Studios. The twins’ musical palette takes in Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Motown, as well as gospel – owing to their father being a pastor – not forgetting a sneaky sliver of grunge, and the result is a duo with serious promise at major chart success in the not too distant future.

Head below to read our chat with Kelly & Kyle all about “Lovely”, working with Binikos, and a potential debut album on the horizon…

Hi Kelly & Kyle, I hope you are both well! Where are we speaking to you from right now?
Currently speaking from our studio on Whidbey Island Washington.

You are twins! What would you say is your biggest similarity?
I think our biggest similarity is our taste in music.

Tell us the biggest pro and one con of working with your twin!
The biggest pro is being able to creatively flow just by knowing what each other needs in terms of sound. The biggest con is sometimes we have a hard time sounding different enough to distinguish our voices

You are situating yourselves as multi-genre artists! How would you personally describe your sound?
I would describe our sound as a pop-soul, funk sound with a bit of reggae and oldies as well.

Congratulations on the release of “Lovely”! Talk to us about the creation of the EP, what is it inspired by?
Well, we grew up listening to a lot of Stevie Wonder and James Brown and I really wanted to emulate their sound with ”Lovely.” I think the bass line really emulates Stevie, while the drums and vocals emulate James. Our original arrangement was good, however, it was totally blown out of the water when Michael Binikos laid his fingers on it. It was an amazing process. Michael had some professional studio musicians come to the legendary Sunset Sound and play the parts I had written but played them with so much more style and authenticity than We had originally.

Do you each have a favourite track from the EP?
Kelly’s favourite track on the EP is ”Tangerine Skies”. Kyle’s favourite is “Lovely”

Often, an EP comes before an album drops! Is this on the cards for you both?
Yes absolutely! We’d love to do an album. Definitely on the cards for sure.

If you could only listen to one album on repeat for the rest of time, which album would that be and why?
The Beatles’ Number 1 Hits album – 1 – because it was also something we used to listen to on repeat and it’s got such a soothing feeling.

What are you both doing after this interview?
More promotion for our song ”Lovely”!

Finally, what are you both looking forward to for the rest of the year? Are you working on any other exciting projects?
Yes! We are definitely excited for the rest of the year to unfold. We have some collaborations on the go and then will be just focussing on our performance and stagecraft so we can do these songs justice out on the road.
