THE IDOL

The third taste of The Weeknd’s upcoming HBO series once again has Hollywood sleaze and excess front and centre – plus we get an idea of the release timeline.

After some scandalous rumours and the first two tantallising teasers — the third official teaser for the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood is finally here, and we also have our first hint at when we can expect it on our screens. Documenting the ‘sex-sells’ narrative in Hollywood, this trailer sees Lily Rose-Depp‘s character reckoning with the requirements of popstar life in this ultra sleazy, Tinseltown world. “Los Angeles is where the monsters of the world come together,” Abel – The Weeknd – Tesfaye’s character imparts menacingly. We also catch another glimpse of the star-studded supporting cast, including Troye Sivan and BLACKPINK’s Jennie.

We’re now urgently awaiting the moment we can binge on Tesfaye and Levinson’s tale of a not-so-relatable pop star who becomes romantically involved with an LA club owner and cult leader, which thanks to this trailer, we now know will be in 2023.

Starring as the leading lawbreakers, Wonderland cover star, Lily-Rose Depp, and The Weeknd deliver powerful performances that prove to be almost as intoxicating as the cast’s drinking habits, which slowly sees them plunge into a white-knuckle-ride to stardom — with imminent danger almost always at the surface. Co-created by The Weeknd alongside Euphoria director Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim, The Idol marks a new direction for The Weeknd’s artistry — where he tests the limits of his dark narratives on a much wider scale.

Also featuring the likes of Tunde Adebimpe, Moses Sumney, Melanie Liburd and Hari Nef, the series might have just made itself the formidable force of HBO Max — and we will be anxiously awaiting that highly sought-after release date.
