It seems as though the Swifties have all grown up and are writing their own declarations of teen romance, well, at least Elyse Jewel’s is doing so. Dropping her new single, “Friends”, the rising pop name contemplates mixed signals, false hope and paranoia – all of which aren’t unheard of when it comes to dating someone new – on her newest release.

“I had been friends with this guy for a while and we would always flirt. I thought for sure that he liked me.” Jewel recalls. “Then after months of that, he got a girlfriend, and everything changed. I was heartbroken and it was a struggle to move on from a relationship that I thought was going to work out.” Her insecurity within the relationship translates masterfully through her lyrics, both bold and tender in nature.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Olivia Rodrigo and, of course, Taylor Swift, as well as showcasing an irresistibly syrupy vocal tone, Jewel situates herself among some of the most exciting pop names to have emerged post-pandemic all thanks to her newest single. And, with the release of a debut EP sitting firmly on the horizon, it is safe to say that we will be eagerly awaiting her next move.
