Professor Paws has dragged himself out of the break-up slump with the help of Liverpudlian hitmaker DJ Anton Powers to give us the most recent and final remix of “Bruk Up”. Though still musing on the pains of his past relationship, Paws’ heartfelt lyrics merge with an Ibizan beat that adds Powers’ club-night optimism to the love-sick original. Powers reimagines the original track with his glistening synths and glossy vocal production to seamlessly marry the worlds of house music and Afrobeat. And, in spite of the lyrical heartache, Paws and Powers get us bobbing our heads, up on our feet, and in the mindset to mend our gloomy moods.
Speaking on the track, Paws muses, “This is about about a true and mature heartbreak. It’s the most honest song I’ve written to date.” The artist owns his vulnerability admitting he is “Bruk Up”, a Jamaican patois term for ‘broken’, expressing the cultural dyad he walks between with his African and British lineage.
With its cross-cultural and genre-transcending sound, Professor and DJ have made a catchy club banger that smoothly incorporates various inherited and musical identities. Expect the applause because you’ll be hearing a lot of Powers and Paws in clubs all over the world.
