NEW NOISE: FERBY

The 22-year-old New Zealand native artist drops her new single and chats with us about her journey so far.

“I’m gonna fuck you in the face,” begins the chorus of FERBY’s latest track, “Bad Vibes Stuck In My Teeth”. Perfectly encapsulating the fierce tenacity and unapologetic grit of the track, the lyric is just one small exemplar of FERBY’s no-holding-back approach to tune-crafting. On a bed of rolling beats and speaker-shaking percussions, the single carries with it a sense of empowerment — while the biting lyricism allows listeners to indulge in an inhibition-free alter ego.

“I just wanted to make this gross, disgusting song – it’s like a cartoon version of me. It’s a much more confident version of who I am – and that’s what I love about rap music, I can invent this character,” imparts FERBY.

To mark the release of the single and to get to know the newest artist on the rap-meets-trap block, we sat down with the 22-year-old New Zealand native musician to discuss the making of the single, her inspirations and what is next to come.

Hey FERBY, how are you? How has this past year been for you?
Hey! It’s been good. It’s honestly been a year of making music and endlessly playing Minecraft at home.

How did you first get into music?
I stayed up late after parties or work and taught myself how to use Ableton. It’s really fun making trap music and feeling like Lil Xan for the night. I began to share it on Soundcloud and people actually liked what I was doing which was a very surreal feeling.

And your hometown, has it inspired you in any way?
Definitely. Lyttelton is full of sweet creative friends that inspire me all the time. Playing shows there is the best too. Everyone is super supportive of the girly trash I come up with.

And now you’re dropping your new single “Bad Vibes Stuck in my Teeth” talk us through your mindset going into it?
This was one of my very first songs I made that I was happy about. At the time I was listening to rappers like Ski Mask, The Slump God and lots of really amazing disgusting trap music. I knew instantly I wanted to make a song that is gross and girly. I’m coming into it feeling super excited and anxious to finally release my first track.

And your music, what do you hope people take away from it?
I know my music won’t be for everyone, but It’s something I really care about and I hope that shows to people.

Who inspires you?
Pink Pantheress, Yaeji, Miley Cyrus, Xxxtentaction, King Princess, Foushee andBaby Keem. I mean there are way too many artists I’m obsessed with at the moment that inspire me in all sorts of different ways.

What are you most excited for?
I’ve been sitting on some things for a while now that I’m going to be releasing in the near future. It’s been a real struggle for me containing everything on a private playlist. Stay tuned for some shows too.
