LOUIS VUITTON WOMEN’S AW22

The luxury French fashion house embraces freedom and character for their youth-meets-maturity collection.

Following the lush homage which Louis Vuitton’s Men’s AW22 show paid to the late Virgil Abloh, the Women’s AW22 show departed from convention. Instead, they delivered an ode to the incredibly fleeting and precious nature of youth, and more broadly, life itself. Reconnecting with the idyllic escapism which clothing inhabits, the collection was totally devoid of structure and theme — creating a world totally of its own; one of volatility, beauty and freedom.

Throughout the entire collection, contrasting prints were at the forefront. With a vibrant colour palette consisting of jewel tones of ruby and citrine, fabrics are layered in unconventional orders and cuts, aiding an attitude of experimentation. Offering an element of dimension, monochrome patterns are incorporated into multiple looks. This offers a visual depiction of the transition between adolescence and adulthood: where the colourful and free elements of our youth meet the structured and tidy style of maturation.

Yet Louis Vuitton views freedom without any sort of directive or impediment. Thus, the entire collection offers a more hopeful outlook on growing up. With oversized silhouettes, it is made known that no matter how old we become, there is always room to grow. Colours and patterns that technically do not go together blend to become a totally new concept of beauty. Reconnecting with the sheer enjoyment that clothing can bring us, Louis Vuitton reminds us that taste is a personal construct — and our character should be guiding our destiny just as much as our clothing.
