Getting us in the mood this Wednesday is queer pop artist Maryze and their addictive track, “Experiments”. Hailing from Montreal, Maryze toys with the sex-induced shame which is often attributed to women and queer people, and uses this as ammunition to create a single rich in unapologetic sensuality. Calling upon the styles of Timbaland and Nelly Furtado, Maryze resurrects the 2000s tendency to hyper-sexualise, using rhythmic melodies and sultry vocals to grind against a brooding R&B soundscape.
Releasing “Experiments” alongside a pulse-raising music video, Maryze says, “In my experience, society often pushes shame onto sexuality. Women especially are expected to be sexualised by everyone but ourselves. I tried to let go of my own internalised shame when writing ‘Experiments’, and explore what makes me feel most powerful in my body: abandoning control to truly feel in control. As a gender-fluid person, I appreciated working with a non-binary cast, and how director Ariana Molly blurred our bodies into one amorphous being. She embraced and amplified my high femme androgyny.”
The track and hypnotic visual comes as the lead offering from the artist’s upcoming album 8, which will no doubt continue Maryze’s journey to become a polished queer icon. Before the imminent release, scroll below to watch “Experiments” now…
