Award ceremonies have really been doing the most when it comes to providing us with much needed pop-culture moments. And making up for the lack of IRL action over the last year, 2022 has brought us another dosage for the SAG Awards — along with some much-deserved acclaim. From the cast of Squid Game making a clean-sweep to Ariana De Bose bagging another accolade for her performance in West Side Story, here are the shows bringing all the drama you may have missed.

Ariana DeBose wins Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role

Since her victory at the Golden Globes, all eyes were on Ariana in her depiction of Anita in West Side Story — clearly taking the favour of SAG Awards voters. Going up against the likes of Kirsten Dunst and Cate Blanchett, Ariana wins the title of Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role. Running the gamut of emotions as Anita, Ariana delves into the stages of grief within her character, while also promoting the attitude of a woman who is passionate, ambitious and driven to better her own circumstances. And for that, she takes home a well-deserved trophy.

Squid Game’s clean sweep

Squid Game had the entire nation binging it’s gory and suspense-filled drama from the off, so there were no surprises when its namesake was nominated more than once for this year’s awards ceremony. Both Lee Jung-Jae and Jung Ho-Yeon won awards for their performances in a drama series, and make history as the first Korean actors to win these awards within their category. Yet the historic legacy of Squid Game does not stop there. The series also won Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series, taking their tally of wins to a total of three — the first-ever series to do so.

Succession wins Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series

If you have not already had the chance to watch Succession, we strongly advise you do — as their latest award will attest to. With the entire cast contributing to the win of ‘Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series’, the series takes home its first ever SAG Award off the back of their multiple Emmy victories.

Jessica Chastain wins Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her performance in The Eyes of Tammy Faye

2022 has seen many beloved actors transform into entirely different people for their characters, and Jessica Chastain definitely led the troupes with her chilling portrayal of Tammy Faye. The dramedy shows the true story of Tammy Faye Bakker and her husband Jim, played by Andrew Garfield. Following the rise and fall of their world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park, it was Chastain’s dedication to Tammy that led her to her first SAG win.

Will Smith won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in King Richard

Would it even be an awards ceremony without Will Smith? Proving its impossibility, the actor is awarded another trophy for his leading role in King Richard. Though his acting abilities go without saying, his latest biopic is a testament to Smith’s ability to encapsulate the effects of discrimination, poverty and violence on an otherwise disliked character. Thanks to this year’s awards, we have a pretty hefty watchlist to get through.
