The Weekend Away

Swapping high tea and headbands for beach tousled waves, Leighton Meester sheds the skin of Blair Waldorf to feature in the vacation-gone-wrong thriller The Weekend Away. Set on a sun-soaked Croatian island, two best friends celebrate their first time away together since they were shackled by marriage and motherhood. However, as the trailer pans to the sea with a floating dead body at its centre, the seemingly feel-good movie takes a turn for the terrifying as Leighton’s character finds herself frantically searching for her missing travel companion. Now a suspect in a murder case, she finds herself at odds piecing together the fragments of her hungover memory — and endures an endless battle between who to trust, and whether she can trust herself.

The Adam Project

It’s been 18 years since we last saw Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo participate in an on-screen marriage, and with the freshly released trailer for The Adam Project, we are pleased to confirm the time has come for them to do it again. Gone are the razzle-red days of 13 Going On 30, however, as we learn Jen’s character’s husband passed away long before the story begins. Following the life of a troubled boy amidst the heartache of losing a father figure, his mother reminds him he must prepare for his future, which is closer than he thinks. Enter, Ryan Reynolds. As a reflection of the boys future self, the duo time travel the world to change the course of the universe, which in turn unearths their mutual pain of the past.

Young, Famous & African

Since our uni days, there is nothing we love more than indulging in the lives of the other half while halfway through a pot noodle. Arriving on March 18th, Young, Famous & African will showcase its richest talents, who bring all the sex, shade and scandal to South Africa. With the drama-level of The Kardashians and the profits of Selling Sunset, the Netflix series has earned a reserved spot on our watchlists — and will give us just enough material to live out our rich girl fantasies. Until then: to more life, more success and more money!

Windfall

When we heard the writer of Se7en was putting his hand to a new thriller, we already had a parking space for Windfall on our Screen Wonders round-up. Departing from his usual comedic persona, Jason Segel stars as a robber who breaks into the empty vacation home of a tech-billionaire, played by Jesse Plemons. But as the homeowner and his wife (Lily Collins) make a surprise visit to their locus of luxury, the plot thickens into a cat and mouse chase with million dollar stakes. As the two minute clip builds tension and creates confusion, it would appear Windfall will trick its audience just as much as its cast. Due to drop in the middle of March, we will be streaming the thriller until we can join Lily back in Paris.

Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives.

Having just finished binging The Tinder Swindler, it’s fair to say we have developed an addiction for the wild goose-chasing of fraudsters — and we need another hit. Thankfully, more threatening voice-notes, dumbfounded deceit and terrifying tricks are submerged within Netflix’s new four-part documentary series, Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives. Sarma Melngailis who was once the celebrity restaurateur behind Pure Food and Wine – the most prestigious Vegan hot spot in America – falls in love with a man who promises her the world and more. Quite literally, it would seem, as he also promises to make her and her dog immortal. Involving Sarma in ploys to drain money from the restaurant and into his pocket, the documentary follows the vegan breadcrumb trail of the true criminal love story. As the roads become less clear, the innocence of the presumed victim comes into question — and for this, we get to hear from the very woman herself. You’ll want to grab the sweet and salty popcorn for this one.

Pieces of Her

So we’re all deceiving each other in 2022, then? Due to drop on March 4th, Netflix release the trailer for Pieces of Her, and it keeps this week’s thriller takeover topped to the brim. Based on the NY Times Bestseller by Karin Slaughter, the film calls every fragment of knowledge into question as the understanding between a mother and daughter evaporates during a traumatic life event. Starring Toni Collette and Bella Heathcote, the feature packs a punch at every corner — leaving no room for settling into your sofa. We really thought we’d had enough trust issues for one week, but I guess we’ll have to make room for some more.

FRESH

As we recover from the anti-climactic tones of the 14th of Feb, it might just be time to get back into dating — but having just watched the trailer for FRESH, we’re putting that idea on hold for a little while. No longer speaking in her gentle Irish accent, Daisy Edgar-Jones finds herself on the lookout for a love that involves no games, where she can be openly herself. Putting himself in the ring, Sebastian Stan wipes off the tattoos of Tommy Lee to woo Daisy’s character, and will stop at no length to do it. Literally. Though having no social media appeared to be a massive bonus of the potential beau, to her friends it was the ultimate red flag — but with rose-tinted glasses firmly on, she couldn’t see it coming. Plummeting into an edge-of-your-seat thriller, the trailer leaves our pulses exponentially rising until the films release on March 4th.

Deep Water

Finally, we thought we’d end our movie round-up with a little teaser for you. Offering us a glimpse into the hotly-anticipated Deep Water, Ana De Armas and Ben Affleck turn their real life split into an on-screen psychological thriller of trust issues, deceit and murder. While the married couple slowly fall out of each other, they begin to play deadly mind games with each other — and the heartbroken husband eventually finds himself as the prime suspect in the disappearances of his wife’s lovers. We don’t know about you, but this is the only type of “romantic” film we want to be watching right now.
