Sofia Lafuente is here to offer some solace from the pressures of hump day with her newest release, “Are You Listening”. With waves of atmospheric instrumentation setting in, aglow with sounds reminiscent of those heard in enchanting mythical movies, listeners will find themselves instantly transported out of the now and into Sofia’s melodic realm. And, while undeniably sweet in sound, when analysing the accompanying lyrics crafted by the artists, a soul-baring depth becomes evident.

“I recorded this song in between lockdowns with the insanely talented artist and producer, SHOR, who is amazing at building textures. It’s funny because this song has evolved in meaning a lot since I wrote it,” reveals Sofia when explaining how the track came to be. “It can definitely be perceived as romantic at first, but I now hear it as a kind of little musical mantra to myself for those moments where you are struggling with self-doubt or insecurities. I wanted to write a song that captured the fear that can come up when you’re being vulnerable with someone for the first time.”

Taking to her home region of Spain, Extremadura, the artist has also dreamed up a music video as otherworldly as her sound. With hues of red and white being used to evoke the symbolism of purity being replaced by a daringness to be free and the artist taking to a plethora of ethereal settings from which to serenade her viewers, the video stands as a physical embodiment of the track’s haunting quality.

With this latest release standing as a stellar introduction to the artist’s 2022 sound and the promise of an EP that is headed towards a spring release hanging in the air, it becomes clear that we can expect big things from Sofia Lafuente this year.
