“I want to control the dynamic more, to be braver, to stop hiding. I want to reach out to people and do my own thing. The main thing for me now is when you sign on to something, usually, it’s a year in advance. You have to consider the questions that people don’t think of: Am I still going to want to do this in a year, bearing in mind everything changes each day? You meet so many people with new scripts coming in every day, it’s a huge risk and I’m learning to acknowledge that more. I want to be more strategic.”

Emma Mackey catapulted straight to the top as Maeve Wiley in Sex Education. Now in 2022, with three new roles in Death on the Nile, Eiffel and Emily, and a desire to direct, she’s enjoying the view with a new state-of-mind. Covering our Spring 2022 issue, she chats to Scarlett Baker on becoming braver, taking control of her future and never being blasé.
