They say imitation is the biggest form of flattery. With this in mind, after a listen to Saya’s sultry new cut, “SUPERFREAK”, the likes of Rick James and Micheal Jackson should consider themselves thoroughly complimented.

Looking to James’ original “Super Freak” as the base reference for her new cut, the artist encourages her listeners to give in to their deepest urges and embrace their more passionate side. And, while the track’s lyricism may be inherently sexy, much like the original, a smokey, more pensive undertone prevails as subtle nods to Jackson’s electric track, “Dirty Diana” become evident in the production. While the above makes it clear that references run rife throughout this particular tune, that is not to say that Toronto-based artist doesn’t leave her mark throughout, however. Upon full review, it can be said that her alluring vocal tone and affinity for dark pop culminate in a track that is original at its core.

“”SUPERFREAK'” was inspired by Rick James’ ‘Super Freak’ and Micheal Jackson ‘Dirty Diana’. It’s a fictional story about thrill-seeking, losing control and letting your guard down. I wrote ‘Superfreak’ in Toronto with producer Jordan Lewis back in 2019, and it was the second song I wrote off the upcoming EP ‘Ready To Burn’,” explains Saya.
