Only the best of designers can push creative limitations into works of emblematic history and that is why Gucci remains to this day one of the most innovative and distinctive fashion houses in the business. To remind us of that fact, Alessandro Michele marks his twentieth year as Creative Director for the luxury Italian brand by revisiting the trademarks which carved Gucci’s iconic lineage. May we present to you: The Gucci Bamboo 1947.

The unmistakable bamboo strap, was first forged during Italy’s post-war era — a time of shortage and little to no traditional raw materials. In response, founder Guccio Gucci, with the accomplice of the house’s visionary Florentine artisans, forged their handbag handles from lightweight bamboo. The slick yet earthy article has since become one of the brands most recognisable features. It is both timeless and sophisticated, elegant yet edgy.

In an effort to pay tribute to the emblem as well as the lasting legacy of Guccio Gucci himself, The Gucci Bamboo 1947 is a love letter to the original design. Reimagined through a contemporary lens, the new version now features an interchangeable strap, which can be swapped with exceptionally crafted leather and/or web straps — offering its owner even more versatility and accessibility. Boasting a round pillow-esque silhouette, the top handle bag is available to purchase in three sizes: medium, small and mini. All bags come in beautiful earthy hues of cuir, white and black patent leathers, with the mini range also boasting an exclusive palette of vibrant tropical shades.

To celebrate the bag birthed from the epitome of creative thinking, Gucci invited international creators to participate in a digital project. Using their craft to encapsulate The Gucci Bamboo 1947, the bag is presented to audiences via multiple mediums, breathing modern life into the couture classic.
