The British artist on the rise explores dark evening moods with his atmospheric new track.

Making a smooth entrance into 2022 is Beau Diako with his enchanting new single “Nylon”. Ushering us into a dreamy soundscape filled with buttery vocals and airy guitars, the British talent takes his sound to new heights on the truck, paying homage to island beats and Latin-inspired melodies. The single, worthy of everyone’s pool-side playlist, encapsulates the fresh air that Diako breathed into his highly anticipated upcoming album, Nylon.

Speaking of his collaboration on the new single, the artist tells us, “It’s always an honour and pleasure to team up with my talented friend Tobi Tunis. He has the the most amazing smooth voice and always writes the most beautiful melodies that I could never get tired of hearing. ‘Nylon’ was one of the first tracks I made after getting a really cheap nylon string guitar to experiment with. His dark and moody but danced idea came out and all the layers and instruments seemed to just fall into place around it. The song gives me the image of being lost and deep in thought on a lonely beach somewhere late at night.”

Leading to the debut of his first album on April 1st, Beau Diako took some time to speak more with us about his new upcoming collaborations. Head below to read how Beau Diako turned a dark evening mood and a cheap nylon guitar into his last hit track of his album…

Hi Beau! How are you? How was your holiday break?
Hello, I’m good thank you. I had a nice break in Poland in December, so it was nice to escape England for a few weeks.

Going into 2022, do you have any New Year’s resolutions?
To start creating again, get inspired and get organised.

When did you first start getting interested in music?
My parents and sisters were always playing music around the house growing up, so I was always listening and taking it in. I only really started playing guitar and getting into it when I was 15 to try and learn Radiohead and Jeff Buckley songs on my dad’s acoustic guitar. It was always my dream to be a guitarist in an indie band.

Who would you cite as your biggest musical influence?
Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, Joanna Newsom, The Smiths, The Strokes, Van Morrsion.

Congratulations on the release of your new single, “Nylon”. Can you talk us through the meaning behind the song?
I lazily named the track “Nylon” as it was just the first idea that came out when I got a really cheap nylon string guitar to record some parts for another project. I think it was one of the most natural productions I’ve made, as this sort of dark evening mood I was in just came out in the sound without much thought. Here’s Tobi’s explanation of the lyrics – “This one is to all the curve balls that get thrown at us. The things that mess us up the most yet also seem to carry the most valuable lessons. The universe can be a real comedian like that.”

And, you have joined forces with your friend Tobi Tunis for this track! How did the two of you meet?
Tobi is one of my favourite singers and has the most incredible, soothing voice. I discovered his music from when he was part of the band Tora, and have been a huge fan ever since. We made quite a bit of music together when he visited London and Berlin from Australia, but “Nylon” was the most recent track finished remotely (in a bit of a hurry), and it turned out to be one of the best tracks we’ve made. He’s also currently working on his album which I can’t wait for everyone to hear.

“Nylon” is also the title track from your upcoming debut album! What can we expect from the new project? Does it have a specific theme or meaning?
Nylon is pretty much the last year and a half of work for me. I think it’s quite a diverse collection of music built from all of my moods, inspirations, journeys and sounds over the past few years, with the help of some incredible artists from all over the world. I’m quite a quiet person so I sort of see this album as my way of trying to connect with people, as it’s something I usually find difficult.

How are you feeling about dropping your first album?
A lot of relief, it was quite a bit of work with so many people involved but I’m happy we finally got there. All of the artists involved are my favourite musicians and singers so it’s amazing to share it with them.

The album artwork features some beautiful pixelated designs! Was there a specific reason you went with this aesthetic?
The artwork is by friend Somnath Bhatt from New York and Ahmedabad. I was introduced to his work by a friend and really connected to it, so I’m honoured that he was keen to be part of the project. He drew what came to him after listening to the album and I’m so happy with how it turned out, he has such a unique style.

Your album is littered with features from some really exciting artists! Do you prefer to work collaboratively?
Most of the time it’s definitely more rewarding for me to collaborate. I’ve been lucky enough to work with so many of my favourite artists over the years, and it’s always exciting to share and have others work together on your ideas. Getting an email with vocal files attached is something I’m always looking forward to. Also I don’t think I’ll ever be able to sing so I definitely need other people to do that.

Apart from the new album, what else can we expect from you in 2022?
I’m joining my friend Tennyson as part of his band for a tour in the first part of the year, and we’re hopefully releasing our joint album later in the year!
