Kicking off our round-up is none other than the Polar Express. Portraying every child’s dream of being whisked away to the North Pole on Christmas Eve, it is a movie brimming with wonder and magic, the perfect way to kick off the holiday season.

8 – Fred Claus

A spin on the age-old tale, Fred Claus takes the focus away from our beloved Santa Claus and instead follows the story of his disgruntled older brother, Fred. After being bailed out of jail by Santa, we follow Fred on a journey to the North Pole during which he is instructed to help with the naughty and nice lists for his saintly brother. Expect family feuds and personal growth by the boatload from this festive comedy.

7 – How The Grinch Stole Christmas

The Grinch

As much as you may not want to admit it, indulging in the anti-Christmas spirit served up by the Grinch is an annual activity we all look forward to. With Jim Carrey’s hilarious portrayal of the fictional character, banished from Whoville due to his wicked ways, sending us into fits of laughter each time, and a joyous message on the powers of Christmas joy prevailing, it is a movie sure to lift spirits all the while providing a large dose of nostalgia.

6 – Home Alone

No Christmas would be complete without a trip to the McCallister’s. One perfect for the whole family, Home Alone is a festive delight filled with thrills, warming displays of the power of love, and the promise of plenty of giggles. Let’s just say, if we get robbed this Xmas, we have a firm plan of the action thanks to this film.

5 – A Muppets Christmas Carol

A childhood classic and an endearing take on an infamous tale, nothing beats the view of The Muppets relaying a message on morals, love and friendship during the holidays. And, with the film providing us with infectious musical numbers, it becomes a staple around this time of year.

4 – Elf

Should you be looking for a lighthearted watch, Elf is always a good shout. With Will Ferrell looking to send us into fits of raucous laughter each year with his delightful portrayal of a man convinced that he is an elf, be prepared for chocolate-covered spaghetti, tracks across continents and, of course, a mission to save Christmas.

3 – Love Actually

Love Actually

When it comes to British Christmas movies, Love Actually takes the cake. A heart-warming display sure to pull on your heartstrings and have you reaching for the tissues, the movie takes viewers on a trip across London as multiple relationships intertwine and fall into each other, resulting in a sweet, albeit chaotic, plot. And, with a star-studded cast featuring Liam Nesson, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and Keira Knightley carrying the movie forward, it cements itself in the number three spot on our list.

2 – Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

While our number two pick might be a controversial one, we personally find nothing more Christmassy than 90s New York. We enjoy nothing more than watching the second instalment of Kevin McCallister’s outrageous adventures during the festive period as he attempts to escape the grips of the unforgiving bandits once more. With the big apple ablaze with the extravagant decorations that it is renowned for, the setting alone is enough to get us into the festive spirit.

1 – The Holiday

Of course, there was only one way to end this round-up, and it is with The Holiday. Because, what more could you want from a Christmas movie? The house swap of our dreams, unrequited love that transpires into a defiant tale on self-worth, and, of course, handsome brothers drunkenly tumbling into cottages in the middle of the night. A Christmas classic worthy of the name and sure to send you into the depths of your Christmas, and emotional, feels, this is a movie that is always at the top of our watch list at the end of the year!
