A Britain’s Got Talent finalist at age 11, a singer-songwriter, and now the lead role in a hit CBBC TV series, it’s safe to say that Molly Rainford boasts an impressive CV.

Gracing our screens as an intergalactic pop superstar, the 20-year-old singer-turned-actress is now starring in the tentpole drama, Nova Jones. “Playing Nova has been my dream role because I’m playing the role that I would love to be in real life, and would hope to be one day,” she says.

Before her ventures into acting, Rainford was capturing the nation’s hearts on the ITV talent show, Britain’s Got Talent. The singer’s unforgettable rendition of “One Night Only” at her audition left the judges speechless, her powerhouse vocals carrying her all the way through to the finals, where she finished in sixth place. Choosing to continue her studies after BGT, Simon Cowell honoured her with a drama school scholarship – just so she could combine her education with her life-long dreams of acting.

Currently pursuing her passion for acting, Rainford also promises new music on the way. Sitting down with Wonderland, the rising star speaks about merging her passions, life-long muses, and everything she has in store for us next.

Hey Molly, how are you? How has this past year been for you?
Hello! I’m very well thank you. This past year has been an interesting one, it’s nice to have a little bit more normality than last year and obviously with series one of Nova Jones coming out, it’s been a lot of fun and a lot going on as I’ve been flying back and forth for filming.

With everything that happened last year was your creativity affected?
I think with everything that happened it made me realise that if I enjoy something I should just go ahead and do it. I love music and I love making music and being an artist but acting and drama have also been something that I really enjoyed so when the opportunity came up to do some self tape auditions and auditions over Zoom I jumped at the opportunity.

You were extremely young when you started your career, what’s the biggest thing you’ve learnt?
I think the biggest thing I’ve learnt is that everyone’s journey is different. Whether you’re just starting now or been in it for a while you shouldn’t rush things. You should really work on yourself and your craft and just enjoy every moment because it’s so much fun when you get to do something you love, so just take it all in.

And then you got into acting, which do you prefer?
That is a super tough question because acting in a TV show is a completely new venture for me and I am loving every minute of it. But I have always been in love with music, singing and performing. I think music will always be my main passion and my first love.

And now you’re starring in Nova Jones, how did this come about?
Like I said previously, I saw the audition come up during lockdown and I auditioned via self tape and then I went on to do some zoom auditions which was a crazy new experience for me. Who knows maybe seeing me on the screen helped them get a feel for what it would be like on the actual telly. Maybe not in space but on Earth.

Who would you cite as your inspirations?
Oh I have a few! One of my main inspirations is Beyoncé just because she is an all-round talent. She’s not only got the most beautiful voice ever but she can dance like no one is watching and she’s a great actress as well. She’s kind of all the things that I strive to be one day. I love amazing vocalists and Diva’s like Jennifer Hudson and Whitney Houston, but I also love pop princesses like Ariana Grande.

What’s next for you, what are you most excited for?
I’m super excited for what is to come with Nova Jones but I’m also super excited to get some more Molly out there. I want to show a bit more of myself as well as my character and i’m also creating more music which could require me to travel to places like Stockholm and LA, as they’re such great hubs of inspiration. I’m also auditioning for exciting things so who knows, hopefully you’ll see more of me very soon!
