In a bid to ensure that your Friday starts off in the best way possible, we are bringing you the infectious sounds of Iris Gold’s “Lover of My Own”. Perfectly capturing the artist’s self-proclaimed brand of ‘hippie hop’, the song is a joyous ode to self-love as empowering lyricism is delivered by the artist on the rise’s bold tone, filled with soulful sensibilities. And, to make the track all the more special, Iris looked to record her newest release with singer, songwriter, musician, producer and Eurythmics co-founder Dave Stewart at his Bay Street Records Recording Studio in the Caribbean.

And, while the cut is sure to have you surging with empowering energy, the music video will make that feeling all the more apparent. Looking to embody the figures that Iris struggled to see in fairytales growing up, a joyous set of visuals filled with period attire, banquets and the star’s humorous portrayal of royalty ensue.

“As a black female singer and rapper, I have often been told I should stick to a particular visual genre, which sucks cause we are so much more,” explains Iris. “I see many artists being pigeonholed, but I also see some amazing artists that are free and experiment. I’m one of those. I love fantasy in every sense of the word. As a little girl, I was obsessed with drawing princesses in fairytale dresses. I didn’t see many princesses who looked like me growing up, so in this video, I could finally fulfil that fantasy.”
