By now, we have all become accustomed to the triumphant tones and uplifting nature of female empowerment anthems. But, alt-pop artist esmerelda is here to switch things up with her brooding new cut, “I’m Not A Princess I’m A God”. With pensive production and the artist’s haunting vocals prevailing, the track will send listeners into a trance as a booming chorus makes its presence known. But, while the other-worldly tone of esmerelda’s newest release is one steeped in alternative angst, that is not to say that its powerful message on female empowerment goes unheard.

“‘I’m Not A Princess I’m A God’ is about being presumed fragile and passive but having this burning need for power and control,” explains esmerelda. “Being a feminine-presenting person, people can implicitly think of you as dependent on men and patriarchal figures, the princess, the damsel in distress who needs saving. The song rejects that narrative, whilst indulging the cheeky god complex I’ve got brewing under here! As much as it is a song about female empowerment, I also wanted it to include edges of this dark megalomania.”

While “I’m Not A Princess I’m A God” is set to plant esmerelda firmly on the musical map, this is not her first foray into music. Having made waves with her debut EP “Nostalgia” after a childhood spent penning lyrics and teaching herself the guitar, the star on the rise situated herself as one-to-watch from the get-go.
