Taking to the London skies, Sarah Burton unveils the ultimate storm chaser uniform during the house’s latest show.
While London Fashion Week may have officially come to a close, due to COVID-induced disruptions and the recent industry abandonment of the fashion schedule, we are still being treated to an array of runway reveals and enchanting catwalk displays. And, the latest house to unveil a collection? During a sky-bound show, Alexander McQueen reveals its SS22 collection.
Taking to the London skies within the confines of a bubbled dome-like structure crafted by John Gosling, creative director Sarah Burton looked to celebrate the wonders of the city skyline in a spectacular in-person show. Drawing on natural imagery and the unpredictable weather conditions synonymous with the UK climate, the same that can be basked in from the rooftop of the McQueen studios, fluffy cloud-like gowns and pleated dresses could be observed, washed over in sky scenes and sunset hues, softening the parade of structured silhouettes that made their way down the runway.
And, naturally, while a weather-focused theme prevailed, that did not mean that signature Alexander McQueen sensibilities were lacking. As impeccable tailoring reigned supreme courtesy of crystal-encrusted double-breasted jackets and gowns provided a rebellious punk sophistication to the collection, embodied best by models such as Naomi Campbell and Jill Kortleve, onlookers were reminded as to why McQueen is undeniably one of the most celebrated British houses.
“I love the idea of the McQueen woman being a storm chaser, of the qualities of storm chasing uniting the passionately individual community of characters wearing the clothes,” explains Sarah when thinking on the collection. “They inhabit the same universe and the clothes are inspired by and made for them. Storm chasing is not only about the beauty of the views but also a sense of mystery and excitement – about embracing the fact that we can’t ever be sure of what might happen next. To give up control and be directly in touch with the unpredictable is to be part of nature, to see and feel it at its most intense – to be at one with a world that is bigger and more powerful than we are.”
