It’s official, the biggest night in fashion just made a comeback, and what a comeback it was. After a year-long and pandemic-induced hiatus, the prestigious Met Gala made a triumphant return last night as it welcomed some of the world’s most celebrated stars for a night dedicated to fashion. And, while some of the event’s most sought after attendees, including Dua Lipa, Kylie Jenner and Harry Styles, were noticeably absent, that did not detract from the looks of those who did make an appearance. From Saweetie in a heritage-honouring Christian Cowan gown to Frank Ocean’s Prada baby and Kim Kardashian being concealed by Balenciaga fabric, head below to enjoy the scenes of your favourite celebrities taking on this year’s Met Gala’s theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”…

Saweetie in Christian Cowan

One of the most thought-through looks of the night was born out of a collaboration between some of fashion’s brightest minds, aka Saweetie and Christian Cowan. A goddess-like gown featuring daring, midriff-exposing cut-outs and a thigh-high slit met with subtle bow detailing, Cowan’s custom design was awe-invoking, especially thanks to the light-reflecting nature of its crystal-studded fabric. But, while the piece was utterly beautiful to observe, its not-so-subtle messaging is what elevated it to one of the best looks from the night. The dress’ dramatic train, which split into two distinctly themed panels washed over in the colour schemes of the Filipino flag and the Black American flag, paid a brilliant tribute to the rapper’s heritage. Saweetie really did understand the assignment.

Lil Nas X in Versace

Lil Nas X in Versace did what he needed to do at last night’s event. With Lady Gaga and her jaw-dropping outfit changes obviously absent, Lil Nas took it upon himself to fill that void with three golden Versace ‘fits. From a dramatic cape to a reflective suit of armour, adorned with the brand’s Medusa motif, and a dazzling bodysuit featuring a front zipper and ornate black and gold detailing, each of the star’s looks paid tribute to the star’s expressive sense of style.

Billie Eilish in Oscar de la Renta

When searching for outfit inspiration, it was only fair that co-chair of last night’s festivities and superstar Billie Eilish looked to a fellow icon. And, that is exactly what she did. Working with Oscar de la Renta to craft a custom gown, Billie chose to embody the glamour and elegant aura synonymous with Hollywood’s first star, Marilyn Monroe. With her hair styled in Marilyn’s infamous voluminous bob, Billie debuted an unexpectedly different aesthetic, which was only furthered by her dress’ never-ending tulle train and blush coloured corset bodice.

Frank Ocean in Prada

At this year’s Met it was Frank Ocean plus one, as the rapper picked Prada as his designer of choice. While his black suit was understated, Frank’s accessory of choice, a slime green Prada baby, quickly transformed the look to one of the most talked-about of the evening. Suspiciously lifelike, the robotic baby could be seen beaming with happiness as it moved and blinked whilst cradled in the “Chanel” singer’s arms. And, in the name of family resemblance, Fank’s hair perfectly matched his baby. Fatherhood suits you, Frank.

Kim Kardashian in Balenciaga

Kim Kardashian taking to the Met in a head-to-toe Balenciaga jersey was something we should have seen coming. Continuing on with her recently debuted Donda aesthetic, the reality star wore a mask that concealed her head and face as a dramatic cape and matching gloves ensured that not an inch of her skin saw the light of day. Keep the wild looks coming Kim.

Olivia Rodrigo in Saint Laurent

Making her Met Gala debut this year was pop’s very own princess, Olivia Rodrigo. Ensuring that her first appearance at the prestigious event was on to remember, the young star turned to Saint Laurent for the one piece of our dreams. Adorned in skin-tight black lace, Olivia opted for a chic exposed briefs moment layered underneath her YSL playsuit, which boasted a thick feather-trimmed bust, which she paired with elegant silver accessories.

Chloe and Halle Bailey in Rodarte

While Kendall and Kylie’s Versace looks at the last Met have held the title of the best sister ‘fits ever to grace the prestigious event, Chloe and Halle Bailey’s Rodarte looks made a successful bid for the pair’s crown last night. While uncoordinated, the two pieces sported by the twins exuded a synergy, meaning the sisters had an undeniable presence on the carpet as Halle’s fringed bodysuit played of Chloe’s caped gown perfectly.

Normani in Valentino

One of the grandest outfits of the night was a gold organza and taffeta dress from Valentino’s Fall Winter 21/22 Des Ateliers collection. And, who better to showcase the regal gown than the queen of music herself, Normani? Featuring a silhouette inducing band sitting above the singer’s waist, the Disney princess-esque left a lasting impact.

Iman in Harris Reed

Brining the sun to this year’s Met was the legendary Iman, in partnership with Harris Reed. Dressed in an intricate handmade gown featuring glimmering gold leaf and a set of flares laying underneath the outfit was a feet of design mastery. And the feathery Vivienne Lake-crafted hat was the stunning finishing touch to what was one of the most celebrated looks of the night.

Megan Thee Stallion in Coach

What would an America-themed Met Gala be without a few prom-inspired looks? Delivering that sweet high school aesthetic at last night’s event was Megan Thee Stallion in a strapless Coach look. Complete with an asymmetric hem boasting protruding ruffles and subtle crystal studs, the dress was adorable in nature. And, the dusty pink hue of the dress was a welcomed touch.

Rosé in Saint Laurent

Ensuring that the LBD had its moment on last night’s cream carpet was Black Pink’s Rosè. And, who does LBD’s better than YSL? Featuring a white satin bow, the dress was the perfect example of simple elegance made statment.

Riri and A$AP in Balenciaga Couture and erl

In the name of paying tribute to the pair’s fashionably late arrival to this year’s Met, last but not least is the most anticipated display of the evening, courtesy of Rihanna and A$AP Rocky. Sporting a billowing mound of couture fabric, Rihanna’s Balenciaga Opera coat brought some serious dramatics to the carpet as an extravagant collared neck and mermaid tail bottom gave the outfit a welcomed dimension. Paired with a haphazardly angled beanie, with a delicate mesh and crystal-adorned cap layering underneath, the outfit made a statement, in true Riri style. As for A$AP, seeing the rapper cosied up in a quilted patchwork erl duvet-meets-cape was undeniably a highlight of the evening.
