This past year has been hard on all of us. From the pandemic to the new world of social distancing, we’ve all at some point experienced some level of anxiety surrounding the future. But for Seattle-hailed artist Shayhan, he took these feelings and channeled it into his new funk-flecked single “Never Ask”. Inviting us into his own personal world, the artist intricately weaves emotionally-driven lyricism with calming productions. Driven by a soulful tone, the single puts Shayhan’s feelings at the forefront as with each psychedelic element, we see Shayhan’s changing and complex emotions.

“‘Never Ask’ a song about my depression. How insanity can get the best of you when all you want to do is find passion and freedom. Nothing comes easy and I often find myself in the same habits no matter how many times I restart. The music video is one example of that. In this case, the fishes and humans swap roles. Riley and I came up with it looking over Long Beach at a park in San Pedro. I think we elaborated on an old idea that involved me holding a goldfish in a plastic bag. Then that lead to talking about Finding Nemo and we both asked ourselves, ‘How we make that different?’”

Moving down to LA last year to further his career, the artist has spent the last 12 months working and writing closely with Rae Khalil and The Free Nationals. With more releases on the way, we’re curious to see what else the singer has in store for us.
