When a beloved track undergoes a fresh and unique reinvention, it commands the attention of devoted fans and a range of music lovers alike. So, in a bid to allow his first non-remix release to cause a stir, David Bay has put his personal stamp on Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart”. Taking the hit’s infamous lyrics and high string machine sounds, the rising artist injected a unique blend of 80s disco and indie-funk sound sensibilities into the classic track, allowing it to be re-born as a retro-inspired staple that is headed straight towards the top of your latest playlist. And, with the track receiving the approval of Joy Division themselves, it becomes all the more special.
But, while the track itself is a thing to behold, directors Faraz Shariat and Sophia Stoltenberg are ensuring that the project only gets better, as they join the artist in crafting the “Love Will Tear Us Apart” music video. A love letter to, well, love, the music video takes us on the romantic journey of two masked figures who dance, date and fall in love throughout the cinematic film. And, what better way to nod to the track’s retro sound than with the feature of disco balls and sparkling streamers?
When speaking on the project, Faraz states, “nothing fetishises love more than the bittersweet promises of rom-com tropes — so why not spice them up in this camp ode to the one and only story of boy meets girl? Through a glossy, self-aware lens “Love Will Tear Us Apart” embraces how we all masquerade on our way to falling in love, how we carry those images of romance in our collective memory.”
