JAGGER WALK

The young designer speaks on his streetwear brand Runaway New York ahead of the release of his Before Noon Candle.

When it comes to streetwear designers, it is safe to say that the most successful names push the boundaries of fashion and look towards the other wonders of the world when trying to build a name for themselves. Someone who is doing just that is Jagger Walk with his effortlessly cool label Runaway New York. With the brand’s newly-released Lookbook filled with the boldly branded tracksuits and sporty baseball caps that you’d expect to see gracing the concrete sidewalks of New York. Now, in a bid to grow his brand and establish himself as a multi-faceted creative, Jagger has unveiled his Before Noon Candle.

“After moving into my own apartment, I found myself buying candles, something I never thought I would have any interest in,” explains the rising designer when speaking on his latest project. “After buying the first few I would think about how it was made and what I could change. I want Runaway to be more than clothing and this candle is the first oddity that can lead the brand down new avenues.”

Upon the release of the latest addition to his line, the designer sat down with Wonderland to talk all things fashion and Runaway New York. Head below to check out our interview with Jagger Walk now…

Hi Jagger, how have you been?
Summer has been full of luck and spontaneity. I snuck into the Men’s Spring-Summer 2022 Louis Vuitton show in Paris with my brother and a friend.

How has the pandemic been for you creatively? Has it impacted your ability to design?
Initially, I saw the pandemic as a moment to sit down and just design, but a week or two into lockdown I found myself coming up with nothing. My desire to design definitely faded for a bit due to quarantine and the collective feeling of uncertainty around the world. When school ended and the weather changed, so did my routine. My motivation and productivity no longer felt frivolous.

Tell us a bit about Runaway New York!
Runaway New York is a fashion and lifestyle brand that represents the evergreen community of New York City. The intention was to create a clothing label that would underscore and represent my affinity for the city.

How do you ensure your collections always incorporate the street style synonymous with the New York fashion scene?
Living in New York, I feel that you’re inevitably thrown into the city’s fashion scene whether you participate or not. From construction workers to the everyday passersby, I am taken with all of it and attempt to recreate these subtleties.

You have a capsule collection release on the horizon which comes accompanied by your exciting Look Book! What inspired these projects?
All of these projects initiate from the same idea, ‘What do I want to wear that I don’t have in my closet’? This will always be the genesis of my projects. As I have started to venture into other products, like our new Before Noon candle, I wanted to create a sensory Runaway product that could alter people’s space and lives in a different way than clothing does.

What is your favourite piece from the new collection?
My favourite piece is the black Uniform Hoodie. The logo on the back of the hoodie was the first design I made for the brand when I was 17.

You also have the exciting release of your Before Noon Candle! What inspired you to add this to your line?
After moving into my own apartment, I found myself buying candles, something I never thought I would have any interest in. After buying the first few I would think about how it was made and what I could change. I want Runaway to be more than clothing and this candle is the first oddity that can lead the brand down new avenues.

The candle features the delicious notes of jasmine, black currant, sandalwood, amber, vanilla and balsam! Was there any reason, in particular, you chose these?
I wanted the Before Noon candle fragrance to feel summer nostalgic – it also burns for around 200 hours. I am really proud of the final scent and how it subtly takes over a room.

Aside from all of these exciting upcoming releases, what would you say has been a career highlight for you so far?
I don’t think I will ever get overseeing people in the street wearing Runaway. Even getting a text from a friend with their Runaway sightings is the coolest thing to me, a sense of sonder.

What do you look forward to in the future? Do you have any other projects you are excited to work on?
In the future, I am excited to dive into new territories from furniture to knit sweaters. I want to approach my future work as if nothing is off-limits.
