It is fair to say that nothing hurts more than the breakdown of a seemingly blissful friendship. Turning to her own experiences with this in mind, soul artist Nia Wyn unveils track “What Did You Expect”. Unparalleled vocals drenched in soul captivate listeners from the first note as twinkling instrumentation and jazz-infused backing allow the track to flow into an irresistibly relaxing lounge sound. And with the Welsh artist lending her personal experiences to lyrics portraying sorrowful and relatable emotions, the track becomes all the more enticing.

“I wrote this song about a friendship that broke down… it’s been years and has taken time to process what happened, but I needed to express the sense of loss and disappointment I was feeling,” explains Wyn when speaking on the meaning behind her latest release.

With her focus on the soul genre inspired by her dad’s extensive record collection, the artist channels both the good and bad experiences she had growing up in the depths of isolation in the quaint town of Llandudno to provide tracks rich in musical influences and introspection. With this particular release following on from the wild success the artist experienced with her EP “Take A Seat”, which was picked up by the likes of Spotify’s New Music Friday and BBC Radio 1, and preceding stints at Bermondsey Social Club and this year’s Victorious Festival, it is clear that Nia Wyn is on track to dominate the world of contemporary soul.
