When it comes to indulging in some Netflix bingeing, there is nothing quite like a Sunday afternoon filled with period dramas, and nothing says period drama quite like a Jane Austen adaptation. So, when the news dropped that Dakota Johnson, Henry Golding and Cosmo Jarvis had been recruited for the Netflix adaptation of Austen’s classic novel Persuasion, movie fans were filled with excitement. And that excitement has only increased as the streaming giant unveils the first images from the upcoming film.

Dressed in period attire, the Fifty Shades of Grey actress wears a grey crêpe ensemble as we get a glimpse at her in the role of the witty 27-year-old Anne Elliot, while the Crazy Rich Asians and Peaky Blinders actors look effortlessly dashing as they step into the roles of Mr Elliot and Captain Frederick Wentworth whilst wearing the suave Mr Darcy-esque uniform synonymous with the period genre. With the stars donning pensive stares and fitting seamlessly into their early 1800s background, the pictures hold all of the promise of historical drama and romance that could be hoped for from a first look.

With Persuasion standing as the last body of work written by the infamous author before her death and a plot filled with broken engagements, naval officers and financial woes, the film promises to stand as an ode to Jane Austen and her beloved Regency period tales. And, with the star-studded cast at the helm of the project and these newly released images setting the tone, it is shaping up to be one of the best novel adaptations of 2021.
