When it comes to 2021, it has been all about hacking from past eras. Whether it is Gen Z delving into the 00s fashion archives or the revival of the 90s trim, many creatives are looking to the past for inspiration. Continuing on with the year’s trend is producer Knife Girl with her 80s disco funk-inspired track “give it 2 yu”. With electric production and an eclectic range of instruments culminating in a dance-worthy sound, the producer blends deep disco vocals and sickly sweet meoldies in a turly complimentary manner. And, with playfully suggestive lyrics standing as a parody of the 80s genre, the song is both sonically impeccable and witty in nature.

“For the sound of this track, I took inspiration from various disco-funk records from the 1980s. Lyrically it’s a parody of the sexual and objectifying lyrics you would often find in those records,” explains Lili Aslo aka Knife Girl.

Following on from the 20-year-old’s sonic new release is her debut EP “Metro” which is set to drop in July. Comprised of tracks recorded in the artist’s bedroom in the midst of the pandemic, the projects promise to take listeners on a journey through genres and eras as well as peel back the layers of her personality as she claims the individual tracks each “represent some part of me.” But, until then, listeners can enjoy the sounds of this 80s parody in the knowledge that Knife Girl is embarking on a rise through the music ranks.
