The artist faces the final boss of hell in the video for new track “SUN GOES DOWN” – and it’s high school.
After going to hell and back (literally) to give the devil a lap dance and enrage conservatives across the globe, our favourite rapper and “Old Town Road”ster is back in the saddle.
Swapping out the Garden of Eden for a galaxy far far away, Nas begins the new track meditating above a lake like one of those galaxy brain memes, bending water to his every whim and way in the lonely purple paradise. The solemn track looks back on a tumultuous past few years for the rapper, be it long days and even longer nights working at Taco Bell, or indulging in otherworldly sci-fi fantasies a la his “Panini” music video.
The track is the rawest offering from Nas thus far. A mix of introspective bars about growing up, self-hatred and navigating the world as a gay Black man are peppered with cheeky nods to his Nicki Minaj stan twitter days and his monumentally public coming out. Add a couple of strung-out, tropical guitars to the mix, and you’ve got one of the most blissful bops of the year.
After getting through the World War that is high school, Prom rolls around to give the star his last big blowout of teenhood. Following a mirrored pep talk (and cheeky cry in the toilets), Nas emerges victorious, throwing himself onto the dancefloor and feeling his goddamn oats. It’s a heartwarming coming of age tale that recalls the neon hues of Euphoria, and one that sounds just as good even after the 50th listen – at least from experience, anyway…
