We have all been getting restless over the wait for Queen & Slim actress Jodie Turner-Smith to make her debut as another queen: King Henry VIII’s second and most notorious wife, Anne Boleyn in the upcoming Channel 5 psychological thriller. And, while we have been offered our first looks at Turner-Smith dressed in a black velvet gown, crowned in a striking headdress and doting on her husband King Henry VIII, very little of the plot has been given away. But, with today marking the anniversary of Anne Boleyn’s execution, Channel 5 have dropped a set of drama-filled imagery, proving that we are set to receive much more than exquisite royal Tudor gowns from the show.

The latest visuals from the show offer Anne Boleyn dressed in a white veil and donning a pensive stare along with a scene of Thomas Cromwell snarling amongst a crowd of onlookers, hinting towards the show’s focus on the queen’s execution. The most dramatic of all the images is one in which we see Anne Boleyn blindfolded, as she awaits her tragic fate. And, with executive producer Dan Jones hoping to “shine a light on today’s most urgent cultural debates” through the storyline, these pictures have only confirmed that an intense social commentary will lace the dramatics and regality of the show.

Directed by Lynsey Miller and written by newcomer Eve Hedderwick Turner, the historical drama will reframe the final months of Anne Boleyn’s life as a psychological thriller, told from the perspective of the formidable queen herself. Its convention-defying three parts will take us on an emotional journey through the trials and tribulations of Anne’s battle to secure a future for herself and her daughter in a patriarchal world. Turner-Smith will be joined on screen by Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You), who’s starring as her brother George, and Mark Stanley (White House Farm), who’s portraying Britain’s most infamous husband and King, Henry VIII. Other notable members of the ensemble cast include Des actor Barry War and star of West End’s Hamilton Jamael Westman.

“There’s so much about Anne’s legend that people believe – whether it’s that she was a witch, she had six fingers, or that she had an incestuous relationship with her brother – we’ve seen all these things portrayed in popular culture,” states Turner-Smith when speaking on her character’s public perception. “I think that for the most part we’ve seen (Anne’s) story told through the lens of the other people around her. But this time we are trying to tell a more human story about this figure who really was just a woman trying to survive in her time and in many ways, as a woman before her time.”

Anne Boleyn is set to air in the UK on Channel 5 later this year.
