In the past, fashion films and TV series usually hit one note. And, while The Devil Wears Prada and series such as Ugly Betty are iconic and loved by the masses, it is safe to say that there is space for a new type of narrative when it comes to the dramatisation of the fashion industry. Well, Netflix is here to provide. Set for release later this month, the streaming service is offering us a gritty, realistic and raw portrayal of the fashion industry with the release of the trailer of Halston for its latest biopic series.
The series sees Ewan McGregor step into the role of infamous designer Roy Halston Frowick, and promises to offer a candid look into the rise and fall of one of America’s most renowned fashion figures. The trailer acts as a portal into the hedonism and glamour of 70s and 80s America as we see flashing scenes filled with glittering gowns, Halston’s entourage and the iconic New York night club Studio 54 as the designer embarks on a journey to find his signature style. But, amongst the charm of the industry lies an alternative narrative, with scenes of drug abuse, withering success and tragedy.
This series, which is set for release on May 14th, could not be landing at a more perfect time. With this year’s Met Gala theme set as “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” Halston and his legacy are set to be at the heart of countless looks, meaning that you are going to want to familiarise yourself with his work. So, get ready, as we are about to receive some serious fashion schooling, drama and unparalleled fashion moments.
