We have all been getting restless over the wait for Queen & Slim actress Jodie Turner-Smith to make her debut as another queen: King Henry VIII’s second and most notorious wife, Anne Boleyn in the upcoming Channel 5 psychological thriller.

Having dropped the first look at the actress as Anne Boleyn back in February, which saw Turner-Smith dressed in a black velvet gown and crowned in a striking headdress – Channel 5 has now blessed us with a further two images from the upcoming show. From the actress draped in a vibrant blue gown and sporting a lavish gold necklace to her doting on her husband King Henry VIII, the show’s new visuals hold the promsie of heartbreak and betrayl as well as a range of exquisite royal Tudor gowns.

Directed by Lynsey Miller and written by newcomer Eve Hedderwick Turner, the new historical drama will reframe the final months of Anne Boleyn’s life as a psychological thriller, told from the perspective of the formidable queen herself. Its convention-defying three parts will take us on an emotional journey through the trials and tribulations of Anne’s battle to secure a future for herself and her daughter in a patriarchal world.

Turner-Smith will be joined on screen by Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You), who’s starring as her brother George, and Mark Stanley (White House Farm), who’s portraying Britain’s most infamous husband and King, Henry VIII. Other notable members of the ensemble cast include Des actor Barry War and star of West End’s Hamilton Jamael Westman.

“I am so excited to join these exciting filmmakers in bringing the story of one of history’s most controversial queens to the screen,” said Turner-Smith in a statement about her decision to take on the role. “Delving deeper into Anne Boleyn’s immense strengths while examining her fatal weaknesses and vulnerabilities, Eve’s scripts immediately captured my imagination.”

She continued: “In the hands of Lynsey Miller, the legend of this formidable queen and fierce mother will be seen as a deeply human story that is still so relevant for today. I look forward to bringing my heart and spirit into this daring retelling of the fall of this iconic woman.”

Anne Boleyn is set to air in the UK on Channel 5 later this year.
