It is true what they say, haters really are gonna hate. Whether it’s people talking behind your back or them outright wishing you the worst, no matter where you go in life adversity is bound to play a part in your journey. Taking this slightly depressing concept and giving it a light-hearted and soul-infused spin is rising star Butterfly Ali. Echoing the sounds of the soul and funk genres, “Testimony” is a track that will have you feeling good and dancing around. Bouncy piano notes and the sizzling sounds of the top hat ring throughout the track as Ali’s bluesy and soulful vocals reign supreme – while nods to his flamboyant personality shine through in the infectious lyrics. Drawing on the singer’s religious beliefs, the song’s visuals take us on a journey from a modern-day interpretation of the garden of Adam and Eve all the way to Ali’s safe place – his church – in a bid to prove that no matter what the tribulation may be, he will make it through.

“Testimony is quite literally a song about my life‘s testimony,” explains Butterfly Ali when discussing the song’s meaning. “I wanted to write a song telling the devil that no matter how much he’s trying to quiet me and my call to share the love of God with people, I’m going to keep going. I wanted to write the song from the perspective of quieting the naysayers as well, in everyday life. People who tell you that you’re unworthy or you’re incapable of something you desire to achieve. Proving them wrong by doing just that.”

While the track itself if a masterful ode to the soul and jazz genres, “Testimony” is not the only project the young talent has been crafting. The singer has also unveiled that his debut EP “Preacher’s Kid” is on the way. With the former Glee star sighting Marvin Gaye and Al Green as some of his greatest influences, the tracks that are set to fill the EP – which include “ Ain’t Ready For Me”, “Pray For’Em” and his latest single “Testimony”. With June 11th set as the release date for this soul-filled project, we are eagerly awaiting its arrival.
