Hailing from one of the world’s fastest rising music scenes in Cairo, 21-year-old rapper Felukah is setting out to change the scene and she’s well on her way. Dropping her latest single “What She Does”, the singer rides the neo-soul-tinged production, carefully skipping over the trap-laced bass line and narrating her own artistic journey. Blurring the lines of hip-hop and R&B throughout verses and bridge, the artist creates her own sound as she fluctuates between poetic rhythms and melodies, blending them together with the productions hypnotic soundscape.
“‘What She Does’ is an ode to boss women everywhere,” explains Felukah, having dropped the track on international Women’s Day. Its video highlights multiple black brown women entrepreneurs and artists in New York City, a beautiful visual to match the powerful message in the song.
Pulling on her cultural heritage and background for her music, Felukah often switches between Arabic and English lyrics, finding inspiration from the likes of Mono Price and Zadie Smith. Already having two full-length projects under her belt, we’re excited for what else the singer has ready for us in the coming months.
