Having an ‘in your feels’ type of moment today? Did your week resemble those sad adjectives they use in adverts for shampoo before the product is supposed to magically change your life? Just fancy some down in the dumps tunes? Well not to worry, US rapper Daniyel is giving us sad-rap by the boatload this Friday.

At just 19 years old, this multi-hyphenate talent can do it all, whether it’s crafting devastating ballads over downbeat traplines, creating his own brand (Kosherboy for those who aren’t in the know), producing more tunes, or even making his own films. With each new creative endeavour, he approaches the task with total determination and a creative rigour that could only grant him success – which leads us to his latest project, 82.

An ode to the street he connects with most in Portland, the rapper wanted to create a visceral experience that deals with nostalgia, hedonism and the power of friendship. On “It’s Okay”, for instance, he talks about love, fleeting feelings and living for the moment, or on latest track “Don’t Judge”, talk turns to the internet. “My inspiration for the song came from me being on social media too much and thinking how we put ourselves out there to be judged by the world daily,” says Daniyel, “now you can say the worst shit to someone without seeing the affects.”

The accompanying video is somewhat self-autobiographical, a powerful experience that follows the journey of the typical ‘outcast kid’ – always new to town and therefore an easy target as they struggle to get their bearings. After getting into a fight with a couple of his peers, they see the similarities in each other and go on an adventure to find his true best friend in the forest. “It’s about not judging before knowing someone,” Daniyel elaborates, wanting to platform a message of unity in a time of such indifference.

With an entire album’s worth of tracks still to come from this artist on the rise, you can bet that 2021 is 100% going to be Daniyel’s year – and we’ll be watching every step of the way.
